Teerk Roo Ra (Peel Island) National Park and Conservation Park was declared on the heritage listed island 18 December 2007 by . The park name Teerk Roo Ra, pronounced took-a-ra, reflects the Quandamooka name for the island.

Although previously listed as 'unallocated State land, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service were responsible for the day-to-day management of the island since 1993. QPWS will continue to manage the Parks in consultation with the traditional owners. 

Legislation helps protect our parks. Under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, preserving the natural condition of parks is the underlying principle for park management. A management plan specific to Peel Island will be developed in 2008.

Moreton Bay Marine Park

Marine areas around Peel Island are subject to regulations designed to protect its natural environmental values such as corals, fish and dugong.

Draft amendments to the marine park are currently out for public consultation (www.fopia.org.au/natEnv.htm).
